Artist Statement

All of my work utilizes the conventions of the potter and is based on the vessel form. The simplest bowl as well as the most intricate non-functional sculpture is conceived of and built from the inside out, and becomes in essence, a clay container.?

I keep completed work on display around the studio to constantly absorb information about older pieces so that I can improve on mistakes and utilize the successful elements. ?My creative process is like a DNA spiral, one which affords a view of completed work from a new perspective while providing a glance of the road ahead.

The Guestbook

spatialk says: Rene's figure and city sculptures feel both ancient and modern, or maybe future relics of the modern age. You can see the evolution of ideas and motifs from piece to piece in a very organic and satisfying way.

Nunzio says: The amazing contrasts between the smooth, porcelain faces and the rough, almost metallic-looking bodies were the most unique use of clay I've ever seen. There was a delicacy as well as strength in the figures too.

ronnierw says: Beautiful ceramic sculture. It would look wonderful in a museum.

judih says: Rene's work is inspiring! I can't begin to imagine how many years it has taken for her to develop her skill as a sculptor. I assume that she must have begun working in clay a few years ago, and perhaps she perfected her talent as a potter with earlier pieces that were more functional than decorative. I would love to see her work on display at the museum.

kitz says: I was able to see a progression in the work from horses to houses to these figures that the artist said were the most recent. There was an artistic unity displayed in 30 or more pieces that spanned ten or more years of work.

schlepper says: I've been a fan of Rene Murray's work for more than 45 years and it has gotten better and better. Her abilities as a craftsperson have become the sort of element that gently serves her gifted eye and visual inventiveness without doing any more than it must to make strong and integrated work.
