Artist Statement
I make large-scale charcoal drawings to explore what power looks like: the gestures, the serious pinstripes, and other instantly recognizable trappings of empire. Recent works are visual dialogues between contemporary media and historical images; emperors and presidents, popes and robber barons.
I examine notions of excess and decadence via parallels of 17th Century Dutch still life paintings with our own twenty-first century fixations.
My current work is expanding the idea of the feast to include architectural elements as wall drawings, transforming the space into a palace. Columns and arches serve as an austere backdrop for the powerbrokers in residence.
