Artist Statement

My work is rooted in the autobiographical, bringing up notions of memory and identity. As a child, I moved from the Philippines---a place of faded colors and cracked surfaces---to Long Island suburbia, a place of new homes, malls, and multiplexes. These two places have always existed simultaneously in me as an artist, and I'm constantly re-examining the subliminal differences between my memories of these disparate environments. Most of my pieces take anywhere from six months to two years to create. Through long periods of painting and plastering I create colors and textures evocative of my childhood home(s).
