Artist Statement

With imagery rooted in heraldry and field guide illustration, John Small combines painting and sculpture with display methods found in natural history museums to continue his examination of space and the grounding of his personal world. The work has a nostalgic feel, which takes an inventive approach to a personal journey in which the artist creates his own fictional landscapes. John is dedicated to the analysis of color, painting, and sculpture, their histories, and the connections that can be made between them and their ability to transform space, and situate the viewer in a narrative environment.
