Artist Statement
With my recent body of work--a series of brightly colored, mixed-media paintings on wood panels--I draw from my experiences of growing up queer in the South and how being HIV+ has informed my life and art. Composing my personal iconography as I trace my life to the present. Pac-Man and the quirky, digital spaces of 1980s videogames are an inspiration; I relate the way I connect places and ideas -- pictorially and conceptually -- to the way Pac-Man moves through the maze of dots.

DoRa says: John's series about stages of his life as a gay man is very impressive and the visuals are super strong, even if you wouldn't know much about the stories wrapped in.
