Artist Statement
I am interested in the places where writing and drawing overlap. Generally speaking, when words are combined with images they break the illusion of the drawing. They flatten it. My theory is that if one wants to incorporate letterforms into an illusionistic image, they need a letterform that is perceived as an object in space first and read as a letter second. I created letters that could maintain a legible silhouette while rotating in space. In these drawings each character introduces itself to the viewer face-to-face as both a unique and unusual figure and as a familiar sound-sign.
