Artist Statement
This series is The Death Penalty Ladies Society. Twelve women have been executed since capital punishment was reinstated in the United States in 1976. They were not women of means. They were accused of killing husbands, mothers, strangers, and children. Some have confessed while others have maintained their innocence. Their individual circumstances are unique while their outcomes similar. Drawing inspiration from John Singer Sargent's portraiture, I've recast these women as socialites, portraying them in a new genteel light. By elevating their status in our society I hope to confront the idea of what privilege means in our society.

GirlGriot says: The concept for this project is amazing. I'm so impressed by what you're trying to do and with your ability to live with your subjects for such a long time. Hope to see the full, finished work one day!

orisharir says: If I could have voted for more artists, I would have voted for her. The concept beyond her portraits is so interesting. It was great to talk with her and learn about how she's developing as a portrait artist.
