Artist Statement

My photographs and paintings capture children in everyday situations, gesturing or interacting in ways that suggest multiple meanings. The figures often have a monumental quality. Images float in empty spaces out of context or with only a suggestion of location. I layer the surfaces of printed and painted works on canvas with magma or crushed glass, revealing and concealing parts of the images. Identities of individuals, often caught looking away from the viewer, are further masked by this textured surface, into which I scrape and draw. Touch is a significant element of my work.
