Artist Statement

oil on linen

My paintings often begin with ideas of sky and land, yet they always refer to my fascination with the spatial tension of icons and how icons both emanate and absorb light. I use square formats to help avoid illusions of recession, resulting in deliberately flattened surfaces. I paint in measurements from my height to sometimes as small as 6” x 6”; These size variations remind me of narrative predella scenes painted in narrow, horizontal rows at the bottom of large altarpieces. How I handle loss is my biggest obstacle, and my painting explores this constantly moving relationship.
