Artist Statement

Born at the foot of the Rockies and raised in the Appalachians, Melissa Armstrong’s work is informed by the history, grandeur and beauty of both mountain ranges. Her studies in the arts and sciences have resulted in environments and objects that directly reference biological and mineralogical processes. Recently, she has been exploring sugar crystals grown in tanks of super saturated solution on hand knit lace and wool. These objects are at once soft and hard, beautiful and baffling, and they acquire new associations with the geologic, the sweet and seductive, the feminine and the inaccessible.
