Artist Statement
As part of my art practice, I go to my studio every day, and commit to one creative act every day.
The oil painting 'Skin' depicts a wedding dress hung from a hook, a glowing remnant of an outlived contract. The doll paintings 'Devil or Angel' and 'You Don't Own Me' allude to the sense of captivity and otherness that can sometimes degrade the marriage bond. The two Moonflowers and the papaya painting 'Prostitute of Color' reflect my awareness that change is inevitable, and that each truly erotic act is built upon faith in the unknown.
The Guestbook
Annabelle says: I loved her reinterpretation of iconic art historical images with contemporary elements such as color etc. Truly beautiful.
nsd says: Luscious beautiful paintings with multiple layers of meaning... race, gender, violence, power. Sensual surfaces seem bathed in lemony light.
mgradel says: I loved Joanne's very intelligent and provocative work. But the stunner was the portrait of her daughter. Balance, harmony, serenity in the composition. Great tenderness in the portrait. And a calm but challenging gaze from the subject. It has really stayed with me.
gretta.keene says: She creates highly original art expressing thought-provoking ideas by skillfully using classical painting techniques. I visited the studio twice, returning a second day to show a friend and found I saw even more with a second viewing.
pauladonis says: Joanne!!! Great to see you and your work...I just loved "Skin"!!!! Let's stay in touch!! pauladonis
beynon says: McFarland's work is beautiful and provocative, filled with luminous intelligence and poignant insight. Her technique is impeccable and her vision compelling. The more closely you look, the more fascinating her work becomes.
flomo428 says: Beautiful wedding dress lucky you got it before it was thrown out oh and good luck hope you win!
deborah.f.schwartz says: Joanne's work is surprising, serious, funny, harsh and beautiful, sharp witted, and provocative. This is an artist (and a poet) who takes chances. Follow along--she loves a good dialogue with her audience!
Annab says: The breadth of the universe in this small collection is stunning, emotionally and intellectually provocative. Skin, a ghost of belief and maybe love. Prostitute of Color and the barely displayed small painting of pears, both suggestively lush despite their radically different temperaments. And you gotta laugh at the fabulous if bitter humor of the Manet and Van Eyck takeoffs. More! I said covetously. I want more.
abyam says: I like the way you mix up mediums and give thought to the voices that may not always be heard
