Artist Statement

Some folks have said: "Steve Gerberich builds some of the most entertaining contraptions you've ever seen." An alchemist of odds and ends, he's always searching for possibilities: a plastic dinosaur for this, a pulley for that. His process is an elaborate call and response; a dialogue between mechanical memories and an active imagination.

Gerberich has created a wealth of fantastical sculptures from discarded labor-saving devices. Push a button or spin a crank and these marvels come alive. Step right up to Gerb's World; there's always work in progress.

The Guestbook

caterinapierre says: I thought that these were amazing mechanical scultptures that have a place within the long history of kinetic art in the tradition of Moholy-Nagy, Jean-Tinguely and Sandy Calder.

gail.goldspiel says: Steve Gerberich's studio and art is unforgettable! Like nothing I have ever seen, as I walked around his studio, I was amazed at his unique, one of a kind creations from everyday objects. The tree from soup cans and green plastic forks was especially memorable as was the mechanical robot in the bathroom! If in the town of Williamsburg, this is certainly a studio not to miss!

mikegertrudes says: Beyond having such a warm and inviting studio and demeanor, Steve's work was the epitome of interesting and you could tell he really loved doing it and having people be part of his work. His studio (that I wouldn't have been able to see if not for this event) was a place I could have spent hours in.

stephentschroeder says: Good luck Steve!

diam0nd says: Steve should have his own museum. Really. There was so much to see in his workshop, and I'm sure I probably missed a big part of it. His quirky mechanisms are of the d.i.y. spirit that I love and it just makes me want to see what he will make next.
