Artist Statement
The 'Street-corner Project' is my most recent piece. It is a quarter-scale reproduction of the corner of Graham Avenue and Meserole Street in Brooklyn---an exact reproduction of some of the objects found on that corner, with all graffiti, flyers, stickers, cigarette butts and common street trash faithfully reproduced in miniature. The installation is intended to be shown outdoors where Brooklynites of all stripes can see their everyday world rendered devotedly by hand. The project is an extension of a prolonged interest in public space. Many other (non-miniature) works from this year will also be on display during the Open Studio.
The Guestbook
jessica.leigh.37 says: Drew's mini installation of a Brooklyn street corner shows a keen attention to detail (down to the teeny pizza box and crumpled newspapers) and captures the pulse of the neighborhood. His craftsmanship is impeccable, and his other work is in an interesting conversation with art historical precedents of the readymade and Claes Oldenburg's models. I loved that this model was instantly recognizable--one glance, and you know you're in Brooklyn.
aholler8 says: After studying Hamilton's intricate street installation, I started paying more attention to urban details. I now think of the walk and don't walk lights as powerful visual tools that exist to get us through the day relatively safely.
